How I Learned To Study Better, In Less Time PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr Marc R. Dussault

Sometimes times it seems like some people are just naturally smart. It seems like they make good grades while they are playing. You probably think that their good grades come easily without studying or without any hard work involved, right?

The example above is very similar to the difficulties I found myself in. I tried all kinds of tricks to improve my grades-- studying at different times of day, in different places, by different schedules. None of it seemed to make a difference.

I spent many, many hours trying to be "as smart" as the smart kids, but it only ended in my frustration and anger. I quickly realized that I had to create another form of study that allowed me the same freedom that my smart peers knew, but I didn't!

Being perpetually curious, I started to look into just how my classmates were getting such astonishingly high grades when they seemed to spend all their time goofing off rather than studying. Since some of my friends were among them, I asked about it outright, and this is what they said:

1. We make time to have fun in our lives, while we're having fun our brains seem to open up and absorb what we learn.

2. Since life is more than constant studying, we've begun to tend towards laziness instead, so you have to figure out how to mark the most important points and develop a way to remember them by association with something that you really relate to during the learning process, this will have what you learn "stick" in your mind, along with the pleasant and relaxing experience you have at that time.

3. Split your study times into short intervals between having fun, this gives you a more concentrated study time, and gives you something to look forward to after you do some good study? i.e. having fun!

After I heard some of these comments, I thought, hey I wanna be lazy too, heck I can remember spending entire weekends (10-15 hours) studying for quizzes and exams that would, today, only take me 2-3 hours? to get even better grades! And I'm not talking about going "back in time" with today's experience.

We are motivated by the knowledge that pain can be avoided or by the irresistible desire to experience pleasure.

I put some of these techniques or rather back then, they were just a way of life or a "scheme" we'd devised as kids to make study less intense, more fun and most definitely more effective for us. But as I got older, I continued to wonder how on earth I could make these childhood study schemes more efficient as we grew into adolescence and adulthood.

Because even though at school, our little system worked quite well, when we finally got to university the increased stress and intensity of study, once again put me through massive pain, frustration and wasted time and effort, which caused me to continue developing my enhanced and somewhat more sophisticated (yet no less effective) study methods, which eventually drove me to develop the techniques in this book by myself and for myself.

I thought up a system and tried to share my advice with my classmates, but often they didn't want to listen. After all, there was no reason to believe me when there was no proof, and many students who could have used my advice were beyond help. Now, however, I have a proven record.

I have accomplished things that are "public" or within people's view and I now have credibility ? I am living proof that these strategies work.

I also have countless examples of students around the world who have used these strategies successfully ? and their numbers are growing by the day. I hope you'll be one of those success stories that I enjoy talking about in my live seminars and writing about in my books.

I genuinely think that just about anyone can learn these fundamental principles and use them to improve their grades immensely-- possibly from Ds all the way up to Bs and sometimes As-- something many people only dream of.

I myself am evidence that this can work, and it can work for you too.
